Edinburgh International Festival
These live illustrations were created for the Edinburgh International Festival as part of their The Truth We Seek theme for 2025. It was an incredible opportunity for me to be a part of the biggest international festival in the world. I created live illustration in front of hundreds of people at The Festival Theatre, Usher Hall and in behind the scenes studio spaces.
For the 2025 Edinburgh International Festival year, the audience were asked to share their answers to 4 questions. The above piece was created with the intention of capturing the Usher Hall attendees’s response to the big question. I framed this piece with caryatids, holding up the question of Truth. You can see here that I also gave this work a place, with a silhouette of Edinburgh setting the scene. My work isn’t just about capturing the words, it’s also about creating a coherent large work that not only picks out the details, but gives a broad overview of context. As you can see, some answers were profound, others were a bit more on the side of humour. All answered welcomed.
The above piece was created during the premiere of Make It Happen, written by James Graham and directed by Andrew Panton. I have heard that Brian Cox gave a shining performance. Unfortunately, I was working on this during the drama so did not get to see the production which received high praise by all that saw it.
The above illustration was created during one of the Youth Collective sessions. The young people had been busy since January, creating their plans for the festival and sharing them with teens from various Edinburgh high schools. This is an image of their thoughts along with Nicola Benedetti’s visit and her shared vision for the festival. After this session, the group (plus myself and my daughter) were treated to a viewing of Breaking Bach. Lucky us!
