Sketch Your Travels for Food
My sketchbook goes with me wherever I travel. I like to capture the places and people around me. Colours. Clothing. Architecture. Every city has it’s own personality and I like to see if I can draw a bit of that.
When I sketch places, I do a little sharing on social media and tag the place I drew. I think it might be nice for them to see their space through someone else’s eyes. Plus, I think it is a little bit delightful for them to know that their space was interesting enough to draw. So, this is where I was, with my daughter, in Reykjavik, at Laundromat Cafe. One wall was covered in 70s 80s photographs of laundromats from around the world. The other wall was covered in maps. And in between there were funky lamps and books and orange shades to make the vibe upbeat and happy. I drew this, with my daughter in the foreground and a holidaying family in the background, shared it on Instagram et voila, I received a message from the owner asking me if they could buy the sketch.
Now how amazing would that be to pay for your travels around the world, one sketch at a time. Maybe this is the think I will aim for when my daughter leaves the family home. ( Oh stop! I can’t even think about that now without blubbing). The owner of the cafe and I struck a deal. One sketch for two meals and a hoddies. (Two turn tables and a microphone?). She now has a fab keepsake from our tour of Reykjavik and some amazing sites in Iceland and they have a moment captured in time, from a travelling illustrator and her daughter.
