Live Illustration and how it can work for you
Let me tell you first how it DOESN’T work and what Live Illustration ISN’T.
I do not sit in a courtroom drawing people. I love drawing people, but certainly not in that setting. My preferences for people drawing tend to take me to cafes, parks, bookshops, events, festival, my bay window, etc. Someplace usually a bit on the happy side of life where people are generally looking and feeling quite serene. Like using their bike as a pillow for instance.
Okay, so what I have just written up there is sketching. Live Illustrating is something apart from sketching.
I draw conversations. There are often images of people, lots of text, fun with lettering and blocked out sections for clarity. My job is to find repeating themes in context, be aware of pulling out important points then commiting them to a drawing. It’s quick work and fully immersive.
It’s interesting to me to hear what people get from all of my hyper focused drawing.
“Oh wow! It’s interesting to see where our conversation took us.”
“I forgot about that bit in the beginning.”
“Amazing! She drew what I said!”
and so on.
Live Illustration honours the topic, the research, the themes, the people that share, the information by committing it to more than words that can easily float into our ears….then out of our brains.
